Fall season has kept us extra busy this year but we didn’t want to miss acknowledging our cull cows. Getting rid of cows that you have raised since birth is never easy, but this year was going to be especially hard. We decided we needed to get rid of 10 cows to keep our numbers manageable. The problem was- We have worked hard through the years building our herd with only the best which means all of our girls are great cows! So how do you choose? To make it even harder, we had a successful breeding season and only had 2 open cows! Which meant now we had to choose 8 to cull that were not only perfectly good cows, but also pregnant!! Knowing where cull cows typically end up, this was not a fun task! So you can imagine how thrilled we were when our awesome vet told us that he would be interested in buying them as replacement cows for his own herd! Yay!! 😃So...thank you to 9, 137, 52, 53, 203, N46, 357 and 35 for the years that you gave us and a huge shoutout to Dr. King and his family for giving them a chance to live on. As a cattle producer, the most important day of our year is the day the trucks show up to purchase our stock in the Fall. It’s our payday and the day all of our hard work throughout the year leads up to. It’s the whole point of the business- to provide you with the beef you eat (you’re welcome). But what most people don’t realize is it is also one of the hardest days of the year. For us, this year was especially tough because along with our calves went 11 of our cows. There are various reasons why cutting these 11 from our herd made sense and was the right thing to do from a business standpoint. But that doesn’t make saying goodbye any easier. These are good cows- good moms who have given us solid calves and done everything we have asked of them year after year. Some that have been with us from the beginning and have taught us so much and others who we have raised since the day they were born. It’s part of what we do, but it isn’t easy. So today I am 2 things- I am incredibly proud of my Mom & I and our team for our growth and accomplishments this year. And I am also immensely grateful for cows like X55, Y67, 2, 57, Y57, 27, 38, 129, 30(10y), 13 and 134.
